National Identity Verification

Mauritius issues a National Identity Card used as the standard reference for identity verification in employment, banking, and government transactions. Verification against national records is generally reliable given the country's compact size and centralized administration.

Criminal Record Check

Mauritius's criminal-clearance document is the Certificate of Character, issued by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions under the Certificate of Character Act 2012 (No. 18/2012), and it states whether an applicant has any previous convictions on record. Applicants can apply in person at their nearest Police Divisional Headquarters or, more commonly now, through the Maupass digital identity platform or directly via the eCertificateofCharacter portal (ecertificateofcharacter.govmu.org), which has significantly streamlined turnaround compared to the fully in-person process.

Employment & Education Verification

Employment verification is generally reliable given the maturity of the formal sector, particularly in the financial-services, BPO, and tourism industries that anchor the Mauritian economy. As elsewhere, education credentials for overseas qualifications should be verified directly with the issuing institution.

Data Protection & Consent

Screening in Mauritius is governed by the Data Protection Act 2017 (Act 20/2017), one of the more comprehensive data protection frameworks in the region, covering collection, storage, and use of personal data, including in employment screening and any social-media or public-record checks. Employers should ensure documented candidate consent and a clearly defined lawful basis for processing before initiating any screening involving Mauritian nationals or residents.

Practical Notes for Employers

• Use the eCertificateofCharacter online portal or Maupass where possible — it is faster than an in-person Divisional Headquarters application.
• Apply Data Protection Act 2017 standards rigorously; Mauritius's regulator is active and its framework is closer to international norms than most regional peers.
• Verify overseas qualifications directly with the issuing institution, given Mauritius's significant expatriate and returning-diaspora workforce.
