Chad Background Screening Guide

Updated 2026-07-21

Chad's Ministry of Justice now offers an online channel for the criminal record extract, a welcome improvement — and while the country's 2021-2024 political transition has formally concluded, employers should still track the residual opposition tension that followed it.

National Identity Verification

Chad's national identity card (Carte Nationale d'Identité) is the standard reference document for identity verification in employment and administrative processes, issued through the Ministry of Public Security and Immigration.

Criminal Record Check

Chad's criminal-clearance document is the extrait de casier judiciaire (bulletin n°3), obtainable through the tribunal covering the applicant's place of birth or residence in N'Djamena or other jurisdictions. Chad's Ministry of Justice has introduced an online request form for the criminal record extract, offering an alternative to a purely in-person process for straightforward applications.

Operational Context: Political Transition

Following the death of longtime president Idriss Déby Itno in April 2021, Chad underwent a military-led transition under his son, Mahamat Idriss Déby. Mahamat Déby won the presidential election of May 2024 with a reported 61% of the vote, a result contested by the opposition; parliamentary elections in December 2024 and Senate elections in February 2025 completed the transition, with Déby's party winning a large majority. Opposition figures have continued to call the process insufficiently transparent. For employers, this means Chad is formally past its post-2021 transition period, but institutional continuity and political tension are still worth factoring into risk assessments for roles with public-sector exposure.

Employment & Education Verification

Employment verification is generally most reliable with established employers in N'Djamena, Chad's capital and main commercial centre. Education verification should be conducted directly with the issuing institution.

Practical Notes for Employers

  • Use the Ministry of Justice's online request channel for the casier judiciaire where eligible, to reduce reliance on in-person tribunal visits.
  • Factor Chad's recent political transition into risk assessments for roles with public-sector or government exposure.
  • Verify education credentials directly with the issuing institution.
