Gabon's criminal record check is a standard requirement for public-sector and much formal private-sector hiring, with a fast official turnaround once the paperwork is in order — the practical bottleneck for employers is usually document assembly, not the record search itself.

National Identity Verification

Gabon's national identity document is the Carte Nationale d'Identité (CNI), including an electronic version (CNIE) now being rolled out, and it is essential for administrative procedures including employment verification. It is issued through the Direction Générale de la Documentation et de l'Immigration (DGDI) and the Ministry of Interior.

Criminal Record Check

Gabon's criminal-clearance document is the casier judiciaire (commonly requested as bulletin n°3), issued by the Ministère de la Justice. Applicants submit a handwritten request to the Chief Clerk (Greffier en Chef) along with a copy of their national ID card or birth certificate, any former residence card, and proof of current residence. Official processing is quoted at 24–48 hours once a complete application is lodged. A criminal record extract less than 6 months old is required for public civil service recruitment and is commonly requested for private-sector roles in banking, security, and education.

Employment & Education Verification

Employment verification is most reliable with established employers in Libreville and Port-Gentil, Gabon's main economic centres, both closely tied to the oil and mining sectors. As with neighboring Central African markets, education verification should be conducted directly with the issuing institution.

Data Protection & Consent

Screening in Gabon is governed by Law No. 001/2011 of 25 September 2011 on the protection of personal data, as amended by Law No. 025/2023 of 12 July 2023. Oversight originally sat with the CNPDCP, which has since been reformed into the Autorité pour la Protection des Données Personnelles et de la Vie Privée (APDPVP), now including provincial representations across the country. Employers should ensure documented candidate consent is in place before initiating any screening involving Gabonese nationals.

• Assemble the full document set (ID, residence proof, any prior residence cards) before submitting the casier judiciaire request — incomplete applications are the main source of delay.
