Burkina Faso has digitized its criminal record request process, which helps on paper — but employers screening candidates here need to weigh that convenience against a security and governance situation that is materially worse than almost anywhere else on the continent.

National Identity Verification

Burkina Faso's national identity document is the Carte Nationale d'Identité Burkinabè (CNIB), a biometric ID card mandatory from age 15 and valid for 10 years, issued through the Police Nationale. It is the standard reference document for identity verification.

Criminal Record Check

Burkina Faso's criminal-clearance document is the casier judiciaire (bulletin n°3), and the Ministry of Justice now operates the e-CasierJudiciaire platform (ecasier-judiciaire.gov.bf), allowing citizens to request a judicial record extract entirely online. As of this writing, the online service covers Burkinabè citizens born in Burkina Faso in specific provinces, as well as those born outside the country — not yet a fully nationwide rollout, so coverage should be confirmed for the specific province in question.

Operational Context: Insurgency & Military Rule

Burkina Faso has been under military rule since a September 2022 coup brought Captain Ibrahim Traoré to power; the junta extended its rule for a further five years in May 2024 and has since dissolved political parties. The country is simultaneously affected by an ongoing jihadist insurgency involving JNIM, Ansarul Islam, and ISGS, active since 2015, which by 2024 made Burkina Faso the country most affected by terrorism globally according to the Global Terrorism Index, with more than 2 million people displaced. Burkina Faso, alongside Mali and Niger, withdrew from ECOWAS in January 2025 to form the Alliance des États du Sahel. For employers, this means administrative continuity, safe on-the-ground verification, and reachability of records or institutions outside the main urban centres cannot be assumed — particularly in provinces affected by active conflict.

Employment & Education Verification

Verification is most reliable for candidates connected to Ouagadougou and other secured urban centres. For candidates connected to conflict-affected provinces, employers should expect longer timelines and should corroborate through multiple independent sources where a single record cannot be confirmed.

• Confirm whether the candidate's province of origin is currently covered by the e-CasierJudiciaire online service before assuming online access is available.
• Build significant contingency time into screening timelines for candidates connected to conflict-affected regions.
• Reassess screening feasibility periodically given the fluid security and political situation.
