Gambia Background Screening Guide

Updated 2026-07-21

The Gambia's criminal record system is centralized and permanent — records are indexed by national ID number and fingerprints, and are never purged from the central registry, which gives the check meaningful depth even though the process itself remains manual.

National Identity Verification

The Gambia's national identity card is the standard reference document for identity verification. Criminal records are indexed against the individual's unique national identity number together with their fingerprints, which supports more reliable matching than name-based lookups alone.

Criminal Record Check

The Gambia's criminal-clearance document is the Police Clearance Certificate, issued by the Ministry of Justice in Banjul, with applications also accepted through the Gambia Police Force directly. Applicants present their national ID card or passport and provide fingerprints, taken at the Criminal Records Office of the Gambia Police Force or an authorized fingerprinting agency. Processing typically takes 10–15 working days, and records are maintained indefinitely at the central Criminal Records Office rather than being purged after a set period.

Employment & Education Verification

Employment verification is generally most reliable with established employers in Banjul and the greater Kombo area, the country's main commercial centre. Education verification should be conducted directly with the issuing institution.

Data Protection & Consent

Employers should ensure documented candidate consent is in place before initiating any screening involving Gambian nationals, applying data protection standards consistent with ECOWAS regional norms. Employers should confirm current requirements directly given limited public documentation of a dedicated, standalone data protection law in the Gambia.

Practical Notes for Employers

  • Budget 10–15 working days for Police Clearance Certificate processing — it is a manual, fingerprint-based process.
  • Because records are never purged, a Gambian criminal record check can surface older history than in markets with record-expungement provisions — interpret findings accordingly.
  • Verify education credentials directly with the issuing institution.
